How Module-Level Storage Changes DC Arc-Fault Risk

By Kingneed Engineering TeamPublished 2026-07-305 min read

DC arc faults are a common cause of plant fires. Distributing cells and adding per-bar protection changes the risk profile owners and insurers ask about.

Where arc faults come from

Loose connectors, aged insulation and damaged conductors create series arcs that string-level protection often cannot locate quickly. In centralized battery designs, an arc near a battery container compounds the consequence.

Distribution as a safety strategy

When cells are spread across the array in small enclosures, no single point holds concentrated energy. Each bar carries an independent BMS and DC arc protection, and rapid shutdown brings string voltage below safety limits in under two seconds.

What insurers actually review

Insurers ask about energy concentration, fault isolation and shutdown behavior. A distributed layout answers all three with structure rather than procedure: small energy per node, physical separation between nodes, and verified shutdown timing.
